The UK has been struggling to control Etizolam abuse and is on the cusp of declaring a public health emergency over it. Now that drug has hopped across the pond and is causing havoc in Florida. Etizolam isn’t legally sold in the US, but it’s similar to benzodiazepines such as Valium and Xanax. This is what you should know about the latest party drug to rock Florida.

It’s in a Legal Grey Zone in the US

Etizolam is not currently legally sold in the US. However, people are able to get their hands on it by purchasing it online without a prescription. It’s not legal in the county, but it also isn’t federally regulated. This is why Florida and other states have taken action to list it as a controlled substance. This allows law enforcement to step in when necessary and charge people with possession of it on a state level.

It’s a Benzodiazepine

Benzodiazepines, or benzos as they often called, are prescription pills often prescribed for anxiety, insomnia, and depression. In the US, commonly abused benzos include Valium and Xanex. Etizolam is a benzo-type drug, which is legitimately prescribed for a variety of reasons, however, it’s not sold in the US currently.

It’s Dangerous to Abuse

Experts state that many overdoses by Etizolam are accidental. People are mixing them with alcohol and other sedatives, which is a deadly combination. When benzos are mixed with sedatives, the respiratory system slowly shuts down until an individual stops breathing. This makes death a very real danger of abusing Etizolam.

Final Thoughts

Luckily, Florida has already made moved to stop Etizolam from becoming an epidemic. By making it a controlled substance in the state and closely monitoring it, law enforcement is trying to keep it contained.
